We offer the classic Rover V8 to suit your individual wishes for performance and character with a range of engine capacities from the original 3.5 litre up to 4.8 or 5.0 litre. Performance of course depends upon capacity and whether carburettors or fuel injection are specified but typically a reliable 250-350bhp / 400-450Nm can be expected. All of these can be mated to a manual gearbox or a six-speed automatic transmission.

Alternatively, for truly exciting performance a 4.7 litre version of the excellent JLR Supercharged AJV8 offers up to 450bhp / 600Nm which again can be offered with either the manual or automatic transmission options.

A number of exhaust options are available on these engines including fully bespoke hand-made stainless steel systems.

Modern day requirements dictate that every vehicle manufacturer needs to have a model that pushes cleaner living to the fore and JE has seized the initiative to produce an engine conversion to do just that.

A combination of JE engineering experience and the availability of increasingly impressive OE manufacturer powerplants has led to our latest development for the Defender; JE’s Petrol 2.3 GDiT conversion.

Based on the Ford Mustang 2.3 litre EcoBoost engine, the conversion is very quiet and smooth especially when mated to the six-speed automatic transmission and gives a very responsive drive experience from 307 bhp and 432 Nm. Your Defender can be legally certified as a petrol vehicle, with excellent performance and good fuel economy. This conversion is also offered with the manual gearbox option.

JE Engineering is one of the few independent companies outside of the main car manufacturers capable of installing a fully electronically controlled automatic gearbox. We offer a ZF/Ford designed 6 speed unit which is available in a range of sizes and torque ratings depending on application and our customer feedback thus far reports a huge convenience to have automatic transmission for driving on busy roads and in urban areas whilst maintaining the iconic style and presence of Defender. Normal mode uses the engine torque to give good acceleration while making smooth progress and maintaining the best fuel economy. Sport mode allows more engine rpm to give more power for faster driving. Sport sequential ‘Tip-Tronic’ mode gives you full control of gear changes for fast driving, but it is also useful in circumstances where a low gear should be held, such as when towing or when climbing a steep winding hill. For off-road driving the use of the ‘Tip-Tronic’ mode is usually best, and in severe conditions the low ratio of the transfer box can be selected.

The 6-speed automatic gearbox is available as a stand-alone conversion on the 2.2 and 2.4 litre Puma Diesel engine Defenders and is also available as an option with our different engine conversions. Part of this conversion can also incorporate an optional electronic handbrake.
